While school leaders are doing their best to treat the symptoms of these issues, they lack the tools to adequately address the root causes of the problem, which are found in a lack of character development, lack of caring mentors, and physical, emotional and mental challenges.
Due in large part to restricted budgets and an increased focus on standardized testing, an overwhelming number of our city’s schools have been forced to neglect a critical element of the education of a student: character. Significant research around social and emotional learning has shown that by high school, most young people have developed the behavioral patterns that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Therefore, it is imperative that these students are presented with an opportunity to absorb and apply lessons of character that will positively shape those patterns while the young people are still moldable.
A Justice Revival strategy that involves churches and faith-based organizations working in partnership with schools with a focus on developing character among DISD students can be crucial in solving the problems plaguing students and will help prepare these young people for the future.
The faith-based community, and in particular, the church has long been seen as an adversary by many schools. A targeted Justice Revival effort to partner with schools to help impact their students will position the Dallas faith-based community and participating churches as advocates.
A discovery process with targeted DISD schools will bring the most prominent issues each school is dealing with to the forefront. Once these issues are identified, a strategic approach to impacting each individual school – based on greatest need – can be established that connects to a broader Justice Revival education initiative.
A Justice Revival education initiative will allow churches and faith-based organizations to utilize existing resources to build strong advocacy relationships with selected DISD schools and work together with these schools to positively impact the lives of students. In doing so, these churches and organizations will establish long-term relationships that will benefit students, teachers, and administrators and allow for the core missions of the churches and organizations to be fulfilled. Such a reach will build bridges economically, socially, geographically and spiritually that will unite the Dallas community.
