Watermark Community Church has partnered with Sequoyah Elementary School in West Dallas, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country. School budget cuts and the pressures of poverty mean the kids in this school need everything from mentors and school supplies to tutors to practical assistance from people who care. Watermark is making a difference by providing one-on-one mentoring to the 4th and 5th graders through Mercy Street, one-on-one tutoring during the weekday, after-school tutoring, Saturday school tutoring, showing appreciation to teachers through monthly luncheons and monthly snack days as well as staff birthday acknowledgement. Volunteers provide assistance to teachers and help with bulletin boards, copying, cutting, etc. We provide dinner and volunteers for the monthly PTA family and educational nights. Watermark volunteers have also assisted in constructing a school garden and outside classroom, remodeling the teacher’s lounge and a hallway project that creatively charts the progress of each student participating in the accelerated reading program. Watermark provides support at monthly pep rallies, regular collecting of school supplies and uniforms and for Christmas a board game drive collected enough games for each child.
