You can make a difference by encouraging your councilperson to follow through on the City of Dallas commitment to provide 700 units of permanent supportive housing. There are 852 homeless persons who need Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). Currently, there are 18 locations in our city that are called Project-Based PSH housing units that are purposely developed for this initiative. There are 167 other locations that have some type of PSH which are called Scattered-Sites.
Share with your councilperson that you support the Permanent Supportive Housing initiative because:
Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) linked with supportive services enable tenants to live independently and have quality of life in community.
It is cost effective and successful alternative to tax dollars being spent on more expensive and less effective emergency services or institutional settings.
It can be a Project-based Rental Assistance Program (PBRA) that goes with the project or Tenant-based Rental Assistance (TBRA) that goes with the client.
It is dedicated to serving single chronically homeless persons with disabling conditions.
Studies show that the average homeless mentally ill person uses an average of $40,449 of public services each year, compared to $12,145 with a similar PSH opportunity, and the reduction in these costs pays for 95% of the building, operating and providing PSH services.
